Gir National Park, also known as Sasan Gir, is near Talala Gir in the state of Gujarat. It is sixty-five kilometers southeast of Junagadh, forty-three kilometers northeast of Somnath and sixty kilometers southwest of Amreli.

Sasan Gir is famous for the population of pure Asiatic Lions. Apart from the Gir National Park in India, you will find these beasts only in Africa. The distance between Junagadh and Gir is about sixty-five kilometers. You can get there either by train or car. Airline traveling is also a possibility. Uncontrolled trophy hunting and severe drought decreased the population of these lions down to fifteen. The Nawab of Junagadh began the task of preservation and banned all hunting. Since then, the number of lions has been growing. Apart from the Gir Forest reserve, three other adjoining sanctuaries are there which you must know about. The three are the Nalsarovar Lake, the Little Rann of Kutch, and the Flamingo Island.

Increasing figures

According to a census report derived in 2010, the number of lions increased to four hundred and eleven. Compared to 2005, the number increased by fifty-two. Since the inception of the lion breeding program, one hundred and eighty lions were born in captivity. It may bring a smile on the faces of wildlife enthusiasts, but it isn’t safe for the farmers who live inside the sanctuary. Carnivorous animals can be lazy enough and search for easy prey, like the cattle of the farmers. Other than the Asiatic Lions who get the most attention, the park is the home many other creatures. Some of them include leopards, deer, foxes, jackals, antelopes, langur, wild boar and the like.

The creatures of Gir

The climate and the landscape of Gir resemble that of Africa. As a result, it is understandable why lions live there so peacefully. The weather of Gir sustains over 450 plant varietals, 2000 insects, 310 varieties of birds and 32 types of mammals. Gir is also the home of 24 species of reptiles. The primary vegetation of Sasan Gir comprises of deciduous forests with gnarled teak trees. Other species of flora includes banyans, extensive grasslands, and thorn bushes. The deciduous forest entirely covers the rugged terrain and rocky hills of Gir. If you like plants and if you keep your eyes peeled then you might even spot a couple of Eucalyptus trees. The presence of this tree is more of an anomaly in the climate of Gir.
